What do Patti Smith, Salvador Dali, and the Dalai Lama have in common? Crows. The mysterious, black birds are associated with the spiritual leader of Tibet. Considered to be a sign of power and protection in Himalayan Buddhism, there are many stories of crows visiting the Dalai Lama's infant incarnations. Indigenous peoples in North America also recognize the crow as a harbinger of power and protection—which brings us to the godmother of punk and her run-in with the dashing, Spanish surrealist the Chelsea Hotel.

Patti Smith was hanging out in the lobby, holding a stuffed black crow she had just bought at the Museum of the American Indian. Salvador Dali, in a black and scarlet cape, strolled in and placed a slim hand on her head. "You are like a crow, a gothic crow," the painter said.

The upshot of all this? Maybe it's time to recognize your inner crow—the dark and powerful part of yourself that knows what's going on. Ward off the doubters and the haters. Announce yourself to the painters, the poets, and the people. The Crow Silk Mask is all black, with subtle shifts in color, depending on the light, and finished with crimson thread.
